I have been an admirer of
Clifford Stoll ever since I happened upon and read
The Cuckoo's Egg in seventh grade.
I reread the book my Sophomore year of High School, right when Clifford started appearing on the MSNBC show entitled
The Site. His enthusiasm for computing leaped off of the screen and I was hooked. I then read his book
Silicon Snake Oil which critiqued society's blind desire to hop online and automate everything. Despite pockets of acclaim, the book was not well received.
I didn't quite understand where Stoll was coming from, as I was admittedly brainwashed into the concept that networks could only empower and enrich humanity. Over the past two years I realized that I had been living like a machine and wanted to give Snake Oil another look while, at the same time, deciding what I was doing with my life.
The book really opened my eyes in many ways and I encourage you to go to the Library and check it out. At the very least, watch the video below, you could both enlighten yourself with the words and energy of Clifford Stoll and take place in some fun edutainment.
