7 Years Gone!

Just found an Elliott Smith show I was supposed to go to 7 years ago in New York on YouTube. I wasn't able to make it due to scheduling conflicts (flew out for an interview and I didn't have the backbone to turn down free dinner).

Quasi opened for Elliott on that tour and Sam and Janet also served as Elliott's backing band.

Oh, What To Do?

Very restless. Spent all morning amongst the Black Friday madness... fruitless. I have many things on my mind, but I have to force myself to focus on the things I can control.

Right now I'm planning for my next project. I'm trying to decide if I should use Java or PHP5. Until recently, I was planning on using Java, but I have been doing a lot of reading about PHP5 and its new object model. I realize that there are several world's of difference between the two languages, aside from the fact that one creates compiled machine code which is executed by a virtual machine and the other is a strictly interpreted language.

However, I keep going back to the object model. I can't help but think that Java is the only real option if I want to make sure my application is well structured and easily maintainable / extendable. Not to mention the lack of namespaces, I was really hoping for better things for PHP at this point.

The least of my worries really, just trying to keep busy.

VictoryRecords.com Relaunch

It's up, I think the difference is night and day. I can now have a peaceful holiday weekend (lots of books to read). I will follow up with this as the weekly web sales reports come in.

Wiikend Preparation

We live in a world of mashups and APIs.

It is interesting to think back to the launch of the GameCube and how I was able to acquire it a day before street date. It was the old fashioned way, through discussion and the sharing of information on the IGN Cube Forums. The same way Warp Pipe was started.

My DS launch experience was even more primitive. I called my local Wal-Mart and headed there a few hours before midnight. This year, we have web applications guiding the way. They provide useful information and I'm sure they come in handy for some people.

Myself? I have an ace up my sleeve.

Bummer

Sometimes things don't work out. My favorite line in Ghostbusters is "everything happens for a reason". I have always lived by that and it remains true thus far. We shall see.

This week has been very hectic. Worked night and day on the victoryrecords.com relaunch, which will be live next week. It will be my year anniversary at Victory the week after next. I am very happy to get the new site out there, the difference is night and day (more on that later).

Right now, we are planning for the wiikend. It has been a long road, I will finally have a true successor to the NES in my living room. Hats off to Nintendo for that. Until tomorrow, farewell.

Annihearsary!

One year ago today, my 1959 Cadillac Miller Meteor Ambulance / Hearse combination arrived in my driveway.

For those who are not familar with me or the situation, I will try to give you an abridged backstory. I am a huge Ghostbusters fan, and have had a fan site online since 1996. Ever since I was a child, I remember wanting to have the car from Ghostbusters (Ecto-1). My dad, who is an engineer at General Motors, would tell me what make and model the car is and how rare it was, this was around 1986 when I was just six years old.

Since 1998 or so, I started hunting for a 1959 Cadillac Hearse / Ambulance. Not really knowledgable in all the different coach builders (the companies that outfit the Cadillac chasis) and not having the means to purchase the car, I didn't get very far. That all changed last summer when I was finally in the position to start looking again.

So late one night in July of 2005, I tasked Google and found a seedy WWWBoard, remember those cgi-based perl boards from Matt's Script Archive circa 1996? Anyway, there was a post from someone claiming to have a restored 1959 Cadillac Hearse. Considering it was posted a year prior, I didn't have much faith that it would lead somewhere. To my surprise, the very next day, I received an email from the seller, along with several images of the car.

While reading the email I learned many things about the car, including the fact that it was in Alaska. The car was fully restored ten years ago, as the owner found it in the bottom of a quary. The engine was pulled, body was sandblasted, repainted, the whole nine yards. Shortly after the restoration, the owner lost the car in a divorce and for ten years, the car had been sitting outside. Ten years of Alaskan weather was a large hesitation for me, along with the logistics and cost of shipping such a large and heavy car. As July, August, and September passed I continued to stay in touch with the owner and tried to rationalize this purchase.

On October 1st of 2005 I decided to throw caution to the wind and purchase the car. It took me a few weeks to find a shipping company and then wait for the car to make it's long way home, but it finally arrived one year ago today.

The car is in storage, as I am still in the process of finding the right people to work on the restoration. I take it out every once and awhile and I either get large smiles and honks or death stares.

Very Wrong

So I took a quick break to checkup on CNN's online election coverage. In doing so I was shocked to notice their "breaking news" in bold red...

Publishing Woes

Already my first day into this and it looks as if blogger's remote
publish has quirks. I am currently driving back to Indiana from Chicago
to visit family / girlfriend. I would consider this post a miracle,
should it publish.

Obligatory First Post

After almost five years of darkness, I finally have a personal website again. In the five years since I last had a site, many things have changed. I have setup a blog, which I can update via my sidekick. Additionally, I have a flickr account which also allows me to take photos from my sidekick and upload wherever I am.

I'm hoping this means my updates will be more frequent and meaningful. Time will tell.
